MISSION STATEMENT

   The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization whose purpose is to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government.  The LWV does not support or oppose candidates or political parties, but does support or oppose issues after study and member agreement.

 

NONPARTISAN POLICY

   The League of Women Voters of the Oneonta Area is a nonpartisan organization and as such does not support or oppose any political party or candidates for elective office.

   Steering Committee members are encouraged to have party affiliations and to serve on appointed boards, commissions, and citizen advisory committees and to actively participate in the political life of the community, except that Steering Committee members may not run for or serve in government office.  Steering Committee members may not hold political party office where they are spokespersons for the party or in preeminent public view.

     The Chairperson, Voter Service, Public Relations, Membership and Action Chairpersons may not publicly support any political party or candidates for elective office.

     Steering Committee members will use discretion in any political activity, ascertaining in advance that such activity will not compromise the nonpartisanship of the League of Women Voters.  Any cases in doubt shall be brought to the Steering Committee for approval.

 

DIVERSITY POLICY    

   The League of Women Voters of the Oneonta Area, in both its values and practices, is committed to diversity and pluralism.  There shall be no barriers to participation in the League.  The League of Women Voters of the Oneonta Area recognizes that diverse perspectives are important and necessary for responsible and representative decision making.

​Our Oneonta Area LWV is financed by member dues and contributions, fundraising activities, grants, and the support of the public.  Dues are not tax-deductible.  Tax-deductible contributions to support our local educational activities should be by separate check payable to the LWV Educational Foundation (to our local PO Box).
