Major organizations are pouring money into acquiring past-their-prime stars from other regions, while the grassroots coaching development system remains neglected. I have watched long enough to know that former stars opening youth academies is mostly a commercial gimmick. Investing in a big-name head coach attracts more attention than building a systematic grassroots coaching pipeline, but it is that system that creates sustainability. My data from following VCS matches over the past three seasons shows something anomalous: the win rate of top teams against mid-tier teams is steadily increasing, but their win rate against international teams of similar caliber is not improving correspondingly. This gap is not about individual skill. It is about in-game tactical adaptability, something that can only be honed by facing diverse playstyles, not by crushing weaker domestic opponents.
